Hatchobori was given that name because of trenches (堀) of 873m (八町) that were dug there at the Edo time. The area’s name became「八丁堀」, as the symbol for 町 has been later on simplified into 丁.
During the Edo period, Hatchobori was known as being the residential neighborhood for those working at the magistrate’s office. It is a quiet area close to the shopping malls of Ginza, the Tokyo station and Tsukiji, one of the world’s biggest fish markets.
